When you play online poker you will notice that there are a lot more tournament structures available to play then if you were playing in a land based casino. The reason is simply because there are thousands of poker players in online poker rooms looking to play tournaments whereas land based casinos couldn’t run tournaments everyday due to there not being enough players. Some of the tournament structures that you can play in online poker rooms are very unique and have some very unique rules which make playing them very entertaining. Let’s take a look at the different tournament structures you will be able to play as an online poker player.
A sit and go tournament is the most popular tournament structure played every single day throughout online poker rooms. You can play sit and go tournaments with 2 players, 6 players, 9 players, 18 players, 45 players, 90 players and 180 players. The prize pool is split up amongst the top finishers in the event and there are no special rules.
Freeroll tournaments have become a huge marketing tool for most online poker rooms and they are tournaments where players can participate without having to pay a buy-in. The poker room will donate a small prize pool so that the top place finishers can win a bit of money so that they can play on the real money tables if they would like too afterwards.
Guaranteed prize pool tournaments are really popular with the large online poker rooms, but they aren’t as popular with the smaller poker rooms. These tournaments are where the poker room will guarantee a prize pool for the players and then if the prize pool isn’t reached by the time the tournament starts the poker room needs to donate the rest of the prize pool.
Satellite tournaments are played in every online poker room and they are tournament where players buy-in with the hopes of winning a seat into a bigger event. The most popular satellite events played are those that offer seats into the World Series of Poker.
Double-up tournaments are rather new to most online poker rooms and they are a very good way to grind up your bankroll slowly. Typically these tournaments start with 10 players and then the top 5 players will win and double up their buy-in. In a $10+$1 tournament you can potentially profit $9 from coming in the top 5 so they are a slower way to grind a bankroll, but the odds are 50% of winning.
Another rather new tournament to most poker rooms is the bounty tournament which can be found in two different structures. The first way it can be played is with 100% of the buy-in going towards the bounty. The second way it can be played is with 50% of the buy-in going towards the prize pool and then 50% of the buy-in going towards the bounty. In order to win the bounty off a player you need to knock them out of the tournament.
