Making the right Moves playing Multi-Table Tournament

Whilst the overall standard of opposition in a typical multi table tournament is rather weak, players are becoming more knowledgeable so it is advisable to familiarise yourself with a number of moves you can use and seen being used at the tables so you can understand what your opponents are attempting to achieve.

A common move, which is also solid mtt poker tournament strategy is to move all-in when you are down to 10-12 big blinds if you have any sort of hand and to move all-in with any two cards if it is folded around to you in late position, especially if there are antes in play. This move is vital as when your stack reaches these low levels, you are in serious danger of being blinded out but by pushing with this sized stack you stand a good chance of claiming the blinds and antes and if you do double up you will have a much healthier stack to play with.

To keep in front of the rising blinds you need to accumulate chips anyway you can and one great way to do so is through a re-steal. Most players know you have to attempt to steal the blinds in the middle and late stages of a poker tournament so most do so liberally. To combat this and to pick up some much needed extra chips all you need to do is keep your eye out for a player who is stealing frequently and when he does it again re-raise him with a very wide range of hands and expect to take the pot down immediately.

A “stop and go” is a powerful move that you can use if you think moving all-in preflop would always be called and would put you in a coinflip situation. Basically all you need to do is to either limp preflop or call a standard raise and then move all-in on the majority of flops. For example, saw you have a pair of sixes and find yourself down to 12 big blinds. If you move all-in you maybe called by a wide variety of hands hoping to bust you but by limping pre and moving all-in on a flop reading Q84 or something similar you may get hands that would have called a preflop shove to actually now fold.
