comapring live vs onlinepoker

Live poker and online poker are 2 very different entities. Many online players think that since they are great at multi-tabling sit&gos they will be successful playing live sit&gos or multi-table tournaments. Some live players also think that since they are good at their local casino, they will be able to dominate online just as easily. Both sides are obviously very wrong. There are huge adjustments that must be made when making the transition from live to online play, and vice versa. Some of the changes are strategic; others are psychological while one has to do with the concept of time.

Live Poker

If a player started out playing online on a site like Full Tilt, he is going to have to adjust to live play. First, there is no automatic dealing at a casino. After each hand, the dealer has to shuffle and redeal. This of course, takes time. Case and point - per hour, players are going to play a lot LESS hands than online. Besides, for maybe being more boring, players are going to have to win a lot more money live if they want to keep their earnings/hour equal to online. The other major difference is since casinos are local, and not worldwide like online poker, the quality of players is going to be a lot worse. Players are not going to know how to adjust to stack sizes and equity. Players can expect to see some awful play live. At the same time, physical tells become much more of a factor live, since they are no factor at all online. Players will look for any physical tell they can, since they believe it is important. Since live tournaments use a clock to determine when blinds go up, do not let the clock fool you when it says 40 minutes until the next blind increase. It is not as long as you think. Ad up all the time it takes to deal, and it is probably equal to 15 minutes online.

Online Poker

Online, the competition is much stronger, so ABC poker is not going to work. Players are going to know how to play position, adjust to stack sizes and when and when not to play suited connectors. As well, players are going to play many more hands per hour, so there is no time to sit back and relax. This however, makes it easier to increase earnings/hour. As well, physical tells go out the window and are replaced by "timing" tells and betting patterns.
Any player must make sure they makes the right adjustments before making the live to online or online to live transition.
